  • Copper vs. Fiber: The Battle of Quick Performance vs. Futureproof Infrastructure

What’s better: Copper coaxial or fiber optic cabling? Here’s a quick primer. Copper vs. Fiber: The Battle of Quick Performance vs. Futureproof Infrastructure What’s better: Copper coaxial or fiber optic cabling? Here’s a quick primer. Feb 3, 2023 What’s better: Copper coaxial or fiber optic cabling? Here’s a quick primer. First – let’s explain their physical differences. Copper and fiber optic cabling are both types of wiring that are used to transmit data communication signals. Copper cabling, which is made of metal wire, has been around for a long time and is widely used. Fiber optic cabling is a newer technology that uses strands of glass or plastic to transmit data using light signals. When do you choose one over the other? Most applications use copper cabling. It is relatively cheap and widely available, and great for businesses on a budget. Copper is easy to work with and install and is compatible with a wide range of devices and systems, including Ethernet, telephone, and broadband networks. However, copper cabling can be prone to interference, which can result in slower data speeds and lower quality connections. As technology evolves to ubiquitously connected environments, the network must support a multitude of applications at greater bandwidth at faster speeds. If your networking infrastructure was based on thinner copper, such as Cat 3 cabling, it may not suffice for the newest applications. Additionally, upgrading a copper network involves a manual switch-out to faster cable. This means single-handedly removing every single foot of cable and reinstalling – which is both time-intensive and costly. Fiber optic cabling is more expensive upfront, but the outcome is a faster and more reliable connection than copper cabling, with data speeds up to 100 times faster. Fiber optic cabling is immune to electromagnetic interference, so it provides a stable and high-quality connection. The magic of fiber, though, is in the upgrades, which take a fraction of the time of a copper replacement. A certified fiber technician uses high air pressure to blow―or jet―new glass fibers into the conduit. Because the optical cable is lightweight and flexible, one fiber pull can replace up to a mile of cable! In conclusion, both copper and fiber optic cabling have their benefits, and the right solution for your business will depend on your specific needs and budget. Copper cabling is the reliable and affordable option, but it may not be as fast or durable as fiber optic cabling. Fiber optic cabling is faster and more reliable, but it is also more expensive and may require specialized equipment and training to install and maintain. • COVID-19: Providing Digital Accessibility to a Shuttered School

With a shuttered school and some students having no internet access to the school server, Central Valley extended its network outwards. COVID-19: Providing Digital Accessibility to a Shuttered School With a shuttered school and some students having no internet access to the school server, Central Valley extended its network outwards. Apr 6, 2020 The shutdown of all schools in the Commonwealth for the foreseeable future – likely until the end of this school year – has prompted school administrators to assess their communication channels and build new ways to deliver instruction to their students. As schools develop online instruction, one serious hurdle is internet accessibility. A home technology survey, administered by Pittsburgh Public Schools, revealed that 5% of households do not have internet access. With libraries and coffee shops also shuttered, these students simply won’t have a way of continuing their education. Central Valley School District came up with an innovative solution to provide access to their networks. They mounted a WiFi access points at strategic locations on the exterior of each of their buildings. Now, any student or faculty member can sit in their car in the parking lot, and securely connect their laptop or device to the school’s network. Students can access lessons, school resources and keep up with their schoolwork. While it’s obviously not as convenient as a home network, it is a workable option in these limited times. Once schools have re-opened, having connectivity in outdoor spaces will enhance the learning experience. Students can research online and do schoolwork in the comfort of outdoor spaces, while faculty can check their daily emails in the privacy of their parked cars. “It was a relatively simple and cost-effective solution,” explained Greg DiFiore, DES systems engineer. “Central Valley already had exterior network cable that connected to their security cameras. We used that existing cable and attached it to the new WiFi access points.” The exterior WiFi access points connect to the existing Alcatel-Lucent controller and share the same cybersecurity features and user experience the staff and students regularly use. This Alcatel Lucent Wi-Fi Access Point was connected to the exterior of the building, providing secure access to the school’s network. • DES AI Architect to Present at IBM Think 2021

Can you teach an AI to have human-like comprehension of language? Mike Pointer unveils a new business use-case. DES AI Architect to Present at IBM Think 2021 Can you teach an AI to have human-like comprehension of language? Mike Pointer unveils a new business use-case. May 7, 2021 Can you teach an AI to have human-like comprehension of language? This is the theme of an upcoming panel discussion at IBM Think 2021 Digital Experience Conference. Using the latest features in IBM Watson Discovery, DES Principal Solutions Architect, Mike Pointer, will demonstrate how AI-powered search can be trained to solve industry-specific reading comprehension tasks. Or, in other words, show how an AI can solve any business task that involves a reading, research and comprehension component -- thus saving business time and money. Humans Think, Speak and Write—So Does AI But first, a brief explainer. Natural Language Processing (NLP) allows an AI to recognize and understand human language. As we have seen with Google Search and Alexa Home Assistant, we can interact using the quirks and euphemisms of human expression, and then receive a reasonably accurate response. Though, there is much more to language processing than a direct response to human queries. For example, through the appropriate training, we can teach an AI an assortment of complex comprehension skills such as discriminating between positive and negative sentiments, classifying documents, or assigning metadata tags to your assets. Using Natural Language Generation (NLG), an AI can be trained to automatically generate text responses from input text, such as an answer from a natural language question and a text passage. All these are highly critical language processing tasks that humans do intuitively. Leveling the Playing Field with IBM Watson In an historic event in 2011, IBM’s Watson computing system outplayed the human competitors in the TV quiz show, Jeopardy. Since then, IBM has steadily developed the Watson system for commercial applications. Currently, Watson is comprised of a suite of products that solve business problems. For instance, IBM Watson Assistant is a tool that builds customer support chatbots or voice agents; IBM Watson Studio is a sandbox tool that helps AI developers to build and run machine learning models. IBM Watson Discovery – a focus of Mike’s software development at DES – is a tool designed to intelligently research documents. Arguably, the biggest impact of IBM Watson is the relative accessibility and affordability of AI tools. Whereas in the past, developing a custom AI application would require extensive time and financial resources, now these core building blocks are ready-built and need only be customized for your specific business application. An experienced AI solution architect will marry, if you will, your business needs with the Watson toolkit, providing you with a tailored and scalable AI solution. Wielding Document Search with Surgical Precision In his panel presentation at IBM Think 2021, Mike explains how he has trained the newest comprehension capability of IBM Watson Discovery. Previously, Watson Discovery would respond to user queries by displaying a suggested paragraph; now, it will search with surgical precision and display a concise and targeted answer. For example, a financial institution making a lending decision. Typically, they would need to manually parse through many documents to identify the necessary facts. Now, a user could ask, “What is the term of this current loan?” and be provided with the precise answer - “2.9%”. At Pittsburgh AI Works , the AI division of DES, Mike and his team have been deploying this feature in several real-world business applications. In one use-case, the AI is trained on a multi hundred-page technical manual. Oftentimes, while service technicians are out in the field, they must reference industry regulations and local and municipal codes. Using AI, they can input a query and get an instant and surgical response. In another use case, leasing agents in a property management company spend inordinate time reviewing leasing contracts. Using the AI, agents are shown which contracts have unusual exceptions and must be reviewed – and which do not and can be swiftly shelved. AI Expert Assist: Your Smart and Scalable Language Bot To answer our initial question – Yes! An AI can indeed have a human-like comprehension of language, and there are many ways that can support your business. Pittsburgh AI Works offers entirely customizable AI tools to meet your targeted business needs. We work with you to identify an AI application that will accelerate your workflow. We build and rapidly deploy a scalable AI solution. With our commitment to speed-to-value, your knowledge workers will be mobilized with the power of IBM Watson Discovery. • Live! Casino Technology Primed for Winning Action

The newly opened Live! Casino in Westmoreland is a showstopper.  The IT infrastructure is equally elaborate. Live! Casino Technology Primed for Winning Action The newly opened Live! Casino in Westmoreland is a showstopper. The IT infrastructure is equally elaborate. Mar 4, 2021 The newly opened Live! Casino in Westmoreland is a showstopper. Over 750 slot machines and 30 table games line the casino floor; a dedicated FanDuel room plays livestream action for real-time betting; a four-lane bowling alley, ski-ball area, and a banquet room provides further entertainment. Hungry? Multiple bar areas, including food service by award-winning chef Guy Fieri, are primed to suit your palette. The network behind this 100,000 sq. ft. space of electrifying power is extraordinarily complex. DES was contracted to install the structured cabling and the Wi-Fi network. There is connectivity within every square foot of the casino. Here is a glimpse into the cabling infrastructure. First and foremost, the slot machines and table games: Each game has two separate networks that relays data to the casino itself and to the PA Gambling Control Board. Scoreboards, powered through Cat 6 cabling, create an interactive player experience for the bowling alley and ski-ball area. The FanDuel room is bandwidth-intensive due to its 8 livestream displays. DES installed 192 strands of single-mode fiber to support the streaming application. Fiber optics are also the backbone of the networked sound system since it can transmit sound across 600 ft. with virtually zero latency. Patrons at the casino can order menu items directly from tabletop iPads. Within a short while, they receive their delicious fare. This efficiency is made possible through a grid of 125 Bluetooth antennas located across the ceiling of the casino. When an order is placed, the patron’s location is relayed to Guy Fieri’s kitchen where food fulfillment is optimized according to order time and order location. For guests seated in the outdoor bar, a beer cart with point-of-sale connectivity, is well-stocked with beverages. The connected experience begins as the patron pull into the valet parking lot. The valet attendant inputs the patron’s vehicle details onto an outdoor computer station while the indoor concierge has access to the details. Security is uncompromising. Surveillance cabling connect 800 cameras to a centralized management system. Every door has a networked locking mechanism that can be controlled remotely. People counters, movement sensors and panic buttons are all part of the surveillance network. Now, step back and visualize the amount of cabling and complexity that makes this high-powered casino a live reality! DES was contracted through Clista Electric on this project.
