DES brings state-of-the-art technology to Steamfitters' training center Dagostino Electronic Services designed and installed much of the technology at the Steamfitters' training facility in Harmony, Pennsylvania. Jun 20, 2018 HARMONY, Pa. – North of Cranberry just off Interstate 79 sits the Pittsburgh Steamfitters’ state-of-the-art 75,000 square foot training facility. Built in 2016, Dagostino Electronic Services was involved in the project from the start, working with the architect and contractor to make the Steamfitters Local 449 ’s vision for the center a reality. The Steamfitters’ new training facility is located north of Pittsburgh just off Interstate 79. Steamfitters are skilled and highly-trained pipe fitters who install process piping systems in buildings and facilities across multiple industries from shopping malls to hospitals. In the 15-county western Pennsylvania area it serves, the Local 449 has 2,700 members and 400 apprentices who use the center for core education and ongoing technical training. The building includes eight classrooms, labs for welding, pipe fitting and HVAC, classrooms, administrative offices and storage. Dale Glavin has been a Steamfitter for nearly four decades and the Local 449’s director of training for 19 years. Training previously took place in three different locations and they knew it was time to consolidate education into one building. “It was very overwhelming at the beginning,” Glavin recalled when discussing the process of a design build and selecting a technology integrator. The Steamfitters wanted a partner that could design and install every aspect of the center’s technology from the cabling to network infrastructure, wireless, security and phone systems and audio visual. “DES was one of those companies that came with the entire package,” Glavin said. “I could see that the team that DES brought to the table really took a lot of pride in making sure they understood our needs and would deliver them.” With skilled experts in all areas, DES was chosen for the job and was on site on day one, running cable and building out Steamfitters’ local area and wireless networks. A surveillance system with access control was added for monitoring all interior and exterior areas of the building with easy-to-use Genetec software. A Fortinet firewall was put into place to help stop cyberattacks. “It was very important to the Steamfitters that we maintained a secure building,” Glavin said. “We’ve had no security issues and the system is working extremely well.” DES also installed an Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise phone system as well as multimedia technologies in conference rooms, classrooms and common areas. The Steamfitters’ training facility has eight classrooms including a flex classroom with a projector and large screen that can be expanded to accommodate more students. All of the classrooms have either a flat screen monitor or an interactive Promethean board , the favorite among students and staff. Promethean’s technology allows students to remotely connect their computer, so the entire class can collaborate on a project or troubleshoot a problem. “Those boards and those classrooms are requested by not only the staff to use but the students prefer to learn off those Promethean boards ,” Glavin said. “It’s been a great product and an enhancement to our delivery system at the training center.” It was DES’ ability to deliver on all facets that proved invaluable to Glavin and the Steamfitters. During the initial meetings, DES’ technically savvy and experienced team made recommendations that helped the Steamfitters define their needs for the new center. “DES asked all the great questions to allow us to hone in on [what we needed],” Glavin stated. “They brought all that expertise to one table and that really was a great advantage for us.” And if there was ever a question or concern, DES was just a phone call away. Glavin concluded, “I would recommend DES to anybody that’s interested in doing audio visual and phone systems and all the products that DES has to offer. They did a fantastic job.” Steamfitters Steamfitters security camera Steamfitters Alcatel-Lucent access point Steamfitters - Conference Room Steamfitters - Conference Room Steamfitters Classroom Steamfitters security camera Steamfitters training center Steamfitters Data Rack Now Read These! - A Message and Response to Covid-19 from DES President, Bob Dagostino
As we navigate the dynamic crisis situation caused by COVID-19, we have been working on a plan of business continuity that will guide and anchor us through this evolving period. A Message and Response to Covid-19 from DES President, Bob Dagostino As we navigate the dynamic crisis situation caused by COVID-19, we have been working on a plan of business continuity that will guide and anchor us through this evolving period. Mar 23, 2020 To: All From: Bob Dagostino Date: March 23, 2020 Subject: DES Business Continuity Response to COVID-19 As we navigate the dynamic crisis situation caused by Covid-19, we have been working on a plan of business continuity that will guide and anchor us through this evolving period. First and foremost, our concern is the health and safety of our employees, their families and of our customers. As a technology integrator, we are classified as an essential business and are permitted to be on-site to support life-sustaining operations. For non-essential businesses, our technicians and staff are well-equipped to work remotely, and in many cases can troubleshoot and provide support to our clients over the internet. At DES, our mission is to connect business with advanced technology – and the need is greater now than ever before. We are proud to be at the forefront of Pittsburgh’s Covid-19 response by assisting with the setup of temporary coronavirus testing and healthcare sites. I am immensely thankful to my Dagostino team. I know that these are challenging times. Covid-19 isn't going to pass swiftly. Instead, we are entering, as Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman described, “a new normal”. The coordinates that we've used until now to define our daily routines and expectations will need to shift to this new normal. Right now, each one of us has an active responsibility to mitigate the spread of this pandemic. Our actions today will actively change the headlines of next week's papers. As a Pittsburgh-based company for over 40 years, we have been through regional crisis. I am committed to doing my part in leading us through to the other side. I am confident that our careful planning, and our commitment and resiliency will keep us solidly fruitful. With well wishes, Bob Dagostino President DES Covid-19 Response.jpg Now Read These!

Hear the Difference: Transform Your Hybrid Meetings Hearing is believing in this episode. Hear the Nureva team walk and talk across a large room and achieve audio equity. Sep 4, 2024 Hello and welcome back to Friday 15! Today, we’re diving into the world of AV, or more specifically, the audio aspect of audiovisual technology. We've all heard the saying "seeing is believing," but today, we’re flipping the script to "hearing is believing" as we take you on an auditory journey. Meet Our Guest: Adrian Doughty from Nureva Our special guest today is Adrian Doughty, the North America Sales Director for Nureva, an audio conferencing company making waves in the AV industry. We’ll explore their cutting-edge audio technology, see how it works, and get Adrian’s take on some pressing questions. Trust us, you need to hear it to believe it! What is Nureva? Adrian kicks things off by introducing Nureva. It’s an audio conferencing company focused on providing exceptional audio experiences in large and extra-large spaces. Whether it’s microphone pickup or speaker output, Nureva ensures that no voice goes unheard. Achieving Auditory Parity Adrian and our host delve into the concept of achieving auditory parity, a crucial idea that surfaced prominently during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a hybrid work scenario, it’s vital that remote participants have an audio experience equal to those physically present in the room. Nureva aims to bridge that gap with what they call a "natural audio experience." "What we're trying to deliver is the actual acoustic sound of the room so that it feels like you're in the space, even though you're not, without delivering the annoying things." Simulating Real-World Scenarios To underscore the importance of auditory parity, we explore several real-world scenarios: The Muffled CEO: Imagine a CEO deep in thought, speaking from a distance or with their back turned. Traditional microphones fail here, but Nureva's system ensures every word is captured clearly. The Back-Turned Teacher: In hybrid classrooms, teachers often turn to the whiteboard, making it hard for remote students to hear. Nureva’s technology picks up audio uniformly across the entire room. Temporary Distractions: Whether it's dropping a pen or engaging in side conversations, Nureva’s system minimizes interruptions, maintaining audio clarity. The Restrained Activist: People often feel chained to a table mic in meetings. Nureva allows speakers to move freely without losing audio quality. The Technology Behind Nureva Adrian gives us a look under the hood of Nureva’s tech, specifically their patented Microphone Mist™ technology. This innovative system uses 12 omnidirectional microphones to create over 8,000 individual points of pickup within a room. "What we do is use twelve omnidirectional microphones and create over 8000 individual points of pickup that fill the room." This means everyone in the room, no matter where they are or how they’re positioned, will be heard. The microphones are fully auto-calibrating, adapting to changes in the room's occupancy and layout without any manual intervention. Afforability Nureva stands out for its affordability and ease of installation compared to traditional ceiling systems. Priced at $4,399, their systems can be installed in about an hour and don’t require ongoing maintenance. This makes them a middle-ground solution between high-end professional AV setups and basic USB plug-and-play units. The HDL 310 audio conferencing system, for example, covers rooms up to 30 feet by 30 feet, providing ample coverage for most conference rooms and classrooms. Enhancing Hybrid Experiences Adrian demonstrates the functionality of the system in various settings, highlighting its adaptability and user-friendly nature. With features like automatic calibration and the capacity to handle background noises such as HVAC systems, Nureva ensures a seamless audio experience. Nureva’s cutting-edge audio technology is reshaping how we experience hybrid meetings and classrooms. Their innovative solutions bring clarity and natural audio experiences to everyone involved, whether they are in the room or attending remotely. With easy installation, automatic calibration, and effective noise management, Nureva stands at the forefront of audio conferencing. We hope this deep dive into Nureva’s technology has been insightful. Stay tuned for more exciting discussions in our Friday 15 series and don’t forget to check out Nureva’s live demo to experience it yourself. - Upper St. Clair police can view school district's security cameras from virtually anywhere
Upper St. Clair police can access the school district's security camera system from their dispatch center, patrol cars or any smartphone or tablet. Upper St. Clair police can view school district's security cameras from virtually anywhere Upper St. Clair police can access the school district's security camera system from their dispatch center, patrol cars or any smartphone or tablet. Nov 30, 2017 UPPER ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Accessibility is one of the many benefits of the Upper St. Clair School District ’s security system, allowing first responders like the township’s police department the ability to view the cameras from virtually anywhere and adding a safety layer many school districts can’t claim. The district uses Milestone video management software to monitor its 240-camera system and the software allows access to the system with a simple login. The cameras are viewable from web browsers, smartphones and tablets. In the dispatch center at the police department, there is a large monitor on the wall dedicated to the camera system. Upper St. Clair police can view the school district’s security camera system from their dispatch center. The system can also be pulled up on the laptops in the department’s patrol cars. Both live and recorded feeds are available and accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at the touch of a button. If there’s a report suspicious person outside one of the schools or an incident in a parking lot, officers can watch the cameras in real time. If school district property is vandalized, detectives can review footage from cameras in the area for leads on who is responsible. “When a complaint, a disturbance [or] an event is reported to the police department, one of the investigators can jump onto a machine in the investigative unit at the police department and review camera footage,” Upper St. Clair School District Network Systems Specialist Paul Jaglowski explained. “First responders [and] the Upper St. Clair Fire Department can also use our camera for any sort of event that requires a first responder.” And the system is already working as it’s intended. Footage has been used to record criminal events including theft and bullying. It’s also been used when they’ve had a need for a rebuttal. Jaglowski explained, “We’ve had instances where non-school district employees and non-school district students and come on the property and claimed they been injured and it was the school district’s responsibility. Sometimes our footage has helped out with those events.” Exterior cameras at the high school’s football stadium, for instance, have also been key in recording incidents. “It has come up in the past where we’ve had activity in student sections and the footage that we recorded has been instrumental in coming to a conclusion and finding out who’s responsible for what and being done with it,” Jaglowski said. Upper St. Clair’s security system is vast, consisting of approximately 240 interior and exterior cameras installed across the district’s three elementary schools, two middle schools, high school and administrative buildings, and continues to grow. As the need for new cameras arises, DES consults with district leaders, designing and installing new solutions that make sense. DES also provides service and support as part of the ongoing partnership. Read more about the school district’s security system here . - DES Ranks as Top Workplace in Pittsburgh

DES Ranks as Top Workplace in Pittsburgh The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette named Dagostino Electronic Services as a Top Workplace for the third time, based on an anonymous survey conducted by Energage, LLC. Aug 23, 2019 The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette named Dagostino Electronic Services a winner of the Pittsburgh Top Workplaces award for the third time during an elegant celebration at the Rivers Casino. The Top Workplaces award is based on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey research partner, Energage LLC. Energage measures several aspects of workplace culture, including alignment, execution, and connection, among others. “Top Workplaces is more than just recognition,” said Doug Claffey, CEO of Energage. “Our research shows organizations that earn the award attract better talent, experience lower turnover, and are better equipped to deliver bottom-line results. Their leaders prioritize and carefully craft a healthy workplace culture that supports employee engagement.” One of the ways that DES builds a healthy workplace culture is actively listening to employee feedback. That feedback led to the creation of the digital transformation team. The digital transformation team, made up of a top employee from each department, meets monthly to evaluate and discuss the technology the company uses and ways to continually improve our systems. “Employee engagement comes from listening to our employees and implementing their ideas,” said Chuck Roberts, vice president of DES. “We have a great team that is passionate about their work, which enhances the work we deliver.” Roberts and Gina Maietta, a DES account manager, attended the ceremony on behalf of the company. “DES really is a top workplace,” Maietta said. “It’s a great family-type environment with an all hands on deck atmosphere. All of my colleagues are extremely knowledgeable and it’s easy to work with them.” DES offers employees competitive benefits like free training and professional development, fully covered health insurance, and company events to blow off steam. “We put a lot of effort into what we can offer our employees,” said Molly DiFiore, director of marketing at DES. “We want to focus on celebrating their knowledge and their dedication to the work they do for the company.” DES is honored to be part of an exclusive list of Pittsburgh businesses that garnered the award. “Becoming a Top Workplace isn’t something organizations can buy,” Claffey said. “It’s an achievement organizations have worked for and a distinction that gives them a competitive advantage. It’s a big deal.” Now Read These! Designing for Technology Seminar at Heinz Field READ How About a Career in STEM? The Q4 Cybersecurity Breakfast brought together cybersecurity professionals to explore the evolving challenges and strategies in today's digital defense landscape. Q4 Cybersecurity Breakfast: Briefing & Guidance The Q4 Cybersecurity Breakfast brought together cybersecurity professionals to explore the evolving challenges and strategies in today's digital defense landscape. Dec 11, 2023 Organized by DES and hosted at the Energy Innovation Center, the Q4 Cybersecurity Breakfast brought together cybersecurity professionals to explore the evolving challenges and strategies in today's digital defense landscape. Jake Barto, representing Fortinet , took the stage as the main presenter, guiding attendees through a session that unveiled the complexities of contemporary cybersecurity. With insights drawn from industry experiences and real-world incidents, Barto provided a comprehensive view of the ever-changing threat landscape. Kicking off with a striking statistic from IBM's research —revealing that enterprises deploy an average of 45 security solutions across their networks — the discussion revolved around the shift from Best of Breed to Security Fabric or Cybersecurity Mesh Architecture (CSMA). This approach integrates diverse security tools into a collaborative ecosystem, centralizing control and data for enhanced detection, response mechanisms, and adaptive management. Jody Ogle, a veteran cybersecurity advisor with experience mitigating hundreds of ransomware situations, elaborated on the role of CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) in ensuring infrastructure resilience. “Cybersecurity must be an investment. It needn’t be much, but it must be a sustained priority,” he emphasized. He highlighted CISA resources available to the private sector, such as assessments, tabletop exercises, and incident response assistance. Throughout the event, attendees delved into tangible examples of current threats, including instances like the Progress MOVEit Transfer SQL Injection Vulnerability and zero-day exploits by malicious actors. Recommendations, such as Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) and Endpoint Protection (EP) and Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) were suggested as a means for continuous access verification and advanced threat mitigation. Closer to home, the presentation underscored the vulnerabilities in Operational Technology (OT) systems, citing incidents like the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa hack. Iran-linked hacktivist groups targeting industrial control systems (ICS) reiterated the urgent need for secure OT environments, emphasizing the critical role of vulnerability scanning services offered by entities like CISA to fortify these vital systems against attacks. As a next step, we encourage you to take advantage of a complimentary cybersecurity threat assessment , offering insights into vulnerabilities present within your network. This assessment serves as a crucial starting point towards shoring up your defenses and safeguarding against potential risks. Stay tuned for our 2024 cyber briefings, where we'll continue to explore the latest trends, insights, and strategies in cybersecurity.
