Morgan State University Enhances Student Life with Wi-Fi 6 What do students want more than anything else on a college campus? Highspeed, low-latency connectivity. Feb 22, 2022 What do students want more than anything else on a college campus? Is it to learn classical logic from the works of Aristotle and Plato? Not exactly… Is it to make lifelong friends and reach their career goals? Definitely closer to the truth… But the real answer is connectivity. Highspeed, low-latency connectivity. Today’s students want to check social wherever they are on campus, livestream the game from the stadium, and video chat in their dorm rooms. It does not matter how outstanding the academics, if a college cannot provide connectivity, they lose the competitive edge. Morgan State University (MSU), a high research college situated in Baltimore, factored admissions when they made the decision to upgrade their network. With a student body of 7,700, the public, historically black school competes with neighboring State schools for students seeking academic rigor. Intent on maximizing their operational excellence and increasing overall institutional capacity, MSU made campus-wide infrastructure a priority. Over the past 5 years, MSU has steadily replaced their network with Alcatel Lucent’s line of OmniAccess wireless access points. Singled out by Gartner for their best-of-breed stability and performance, the Omni series dynamically adapts and prioritizes bandwidth for optimal connectivity. The latest phase of the network upgrade included the deployment of Wi-Fi 6 at the Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management. The specs of Omni AP555 access point are eye-watering. Each AP can service up to 2,048 clients with speeds of up to 5Gbs. Whereas legacy systems must split the bandwidth between each client, with Wi-Fi 6, density has much less impact on bandwidth. A networking upgrade this extensive required the migration of the legacy system to the new network architecture. Jeff Wirtz, DES network engineer, sifted through 4,000 lines of code to ensure a flawless migration from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 6. DES further ensured cost-savings with the mobility master that halves the licensing registration for all 2,050 access points. Along with Magothy Technology, our Strategic Partner who handles Network Infrastructure and is the Primary Contractor at Morgan State, DES has serviced MSU’s voice and wireless network since 2016. As MSU embarks on their 2030 strategic plan, further upgrades are imminently planned, with three more campus buildings scheduled for Spring 2022. Now Read These! - DES AI Architect to Present at IBM Think 2021
DES AI Architect to Present at IBM Think 2021 Can you teach an AI to have human-like comprehension of language? Mike Pointer unveils a new business use-case. May 7, 2021 Can you teach an AI to have human-like comprehension of language? This is the theme of an upcoming panel discussion at IBM Think 2021 Digital Experience Conference. Using the latest features in IBM Watson Discovery, DES Principal Solutions Architect, Mike Pointer, will demonstrate how AI-powered search can be trained to solve industry-specific reading comprehension tasks. Or, in other words, show how an AI can solve any business task that involves a reading, research and comprehension component -- thus saving business time and money. Humans Think, Speak and Write—So Does AI But first, a brief explainer. Natural Language Processing (NLP) allows an AI to recognize and understand human language. As we have seen with Google Search and Alexa Home Assistant, we can interact using the quirks and euphemisms of human expression, and then receive a reasonably accurate response. Though, there is much more to language processing than a direct response to human queries. For example, through the appropriate training, we can teach an AI an assortment of complex comprehension skills such as discriminating between positive and negative sentiments, classifying documents, or assigning metadata tags to your assets. Using Natural Language Generation (NLG), an AI can be trained to automatically generate text responses from input text, such as an answer from a natural language question and a text passage. All these are highly critical language processing tasks that humans do intuitively. Leveling the Playing Field with IBM Watson In an historic event in 2011, IBM’s Watson computing system outplayed the human competitors in the TV quiz show, Jeopardy. Since then, IBM has steadily developed the Watson system for commercial applications. Currently, Watson is comprised of a suite of products that solve business problems. For instance, IBM Watson Assistant is a tool that builds customer support chatbots or voice agents; IBM Watson Studio is a sandbox tool that helps AI developers to build and run machine learning models. IBM Watson Discovery – a focus of Mike’s software development at DES – is a tool designed to intelligently research documents. Arguably, the biggest impact of IBM Watson is the relative accessibility and affordability of AI tools. Whereas in the past, developing a custom AI application would require extensive time and financial resources, now these core building blocks are ready-built and need only be customized for your specific business application. An experienced AI solution architect will marry, if you will, your business needs with the Watson toolkit, providing you with a tailored and scalable AI solution. Wielding Document Search with Surgical Precision In his panel presentation at IBM Think 2021, Mike explains how he has trained the newest comprehension capability of IBM Watson Discovery. Previously, Watson Discovery would respond to user queries by displaying a suggested paragraph; now, it will search with surgical precision and display a concise and targeted answer. For example, a financial institution making a lending decision. Typically, they would need to manually parse through many documents to identify the necessary facts. Now, a user could ask, “What is the term of this current loan?” and be provided with the precise answer - “2.9%”. At Pittsburgh AI Works , the AI division of DES, Mike and his team have been deploying this feature in several real-world business applications. In one use-case, the AI is trained on a multi hundred-page technical manual. Oftentimes, while service technicians are out in the field, they must reference industry regulations and local and municipal codes. Using AI, they can input a query and get an instant and surgical response. In another use case, leasing agents in a property management company spend inordinate time reviewing leasing contracts. Using the AI, agents are shown which contracts have unusual exceptions and must be reviewed – and which do not and can be swiftly shelved. - Gov. Wolf's Security Grant is now LIVE for 30 days
Gov. Wolf's Security Grant is now LIVE for 30 days New for 2020, the Nonprofit Security Grant (Act 83) will distribute $5 million for security enhancements to eligible nonprofits who fall under a single bias hate crime category. The application window is actively open for only 30 days until February 14, at 11:45 pm. Jan 17, 2020 Created as a response to the Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, the Nonprofit Security Grant Fund is aimed to enhance security for any 501(c)(3) nonprofit within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who is also a target of single-bias hate crimes . The grant is administered by the PCCD and ranges from $5,000 to $150,000, however any request over $25,000 will require a percentage of matching funds. Dagostino has compiled a user-friendly resource guide to help nonprofits navigate this time-sensitive grant. It explains how to determine if a nonprofit is a target for hate crimes, what equipment the grant covers, what documentation is needed for application, and links to useful sites. We will be continuously updating the guide as new information is disclosed to the public. Dagostino is well-positioned to evaluate the security needs of nonprofits. We tailor and install a comprehensive range of security and surveillance solutions, extending from perimeter and entry access control to emergency management and communication systems in-building. - DES to be Founding Member of EIC Innovation Hall
DES to be Founding Member of EIC Innovation Hall DES leads Technology Innovation in Pittsburgh with Showcase Partnership in EIC Innovation Hall. Jan 6, 2020 DES has joined Covestro and Peoples as Founding Members of The Innovation Hall, housed in Pittsburgh’s Energy Innovation Center. The Innovation Hall is geared to become a dynamic event and exhibit space showcasing next-generation technology from the region’s leading drivers in energy sustainability. Described as “A Living Laboratory,” the Energy Innovation Center is a magnificent testament to the powerful possibilities of green adaptive reuse. Formally the site of the Connelley Trade School, the pioneering vocational institution trained multiple generations of students into the industrial workforce. After the decline of the rustbelt economy, the building shuttered its doors in 2003 and lay in disrepair for a decade, until its purchase and revitalization by the Pittsburgh Gateway Corporation. With a deliberate focus to promote entrepreneurship and energy-sector research, the nonprofit assembled the city’s cutting-edge businesses and universities to create the building of the future. Boasting a sustainable infrastructure, including locally sourced building materials, onsite energy generation and strict clean air standards, the Energy Innovation Center was granted the distinguished LEED Platinum award in 2017. Now, the EIC wants the building’s interior spaces to reflect the novelty of the building itself. The Innovation Hall, a two-level, multiuse space in the heart of the building, will be designed in tandem with the Founding Members to feature emerging technology in real-life action. Bob Dagostino, president of DES, is thrilled at the opportunity. “Front-row access to a building with this level of commitment to energy innovation will give us a virtual sandbox, so to speak, to demonstrate how the newest communication technology will interact with our lives.” DES, a Mid-Atlantic leader for integrated communication solutions, is researching ways to use lighting fixtures beyond illumination. Visible light communication (VLC) is a new-wave communication variant that uses the light itself to embed advanced data, creating a networked grid that is fully responsive to its environment. Visitors to the Innovation Hall would be able to communicate via this innovative medium. “As a Founding Member,” Dagostino added, ”I want visitors to the site to actively imagine the possibilities of the next technology revolution.” With DES’s proven expertise in multimedia, security and network infrastructure, including configuring artificial intelligence applications for clients in government, education, healthcare and enterprise business sectors, the company’s partnership will introduce a wealth of world-class vendors into the space. Promethean, Fortinet, Alcatel-Lucent, Genetec and Barracuda are just several of DES’s solution partners. “Exciting is an understatement,” remarked Robert Meeder, Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation CEO & President, “Within the span of our first meeting with the Dagostino team, we were convinced that this company’s experience, leadership and vision fit ‘hand and glove’ with the Innovation Hall’s goal to represent the best of our region’s global innovators.” Now Read These!
