Data Breach Live with DES

Organizations of all sizes continue to fall victim to data breaches and other cybercrime tactics at a growing rate. We know that security is the top IT priority for most businesses but when reality sets in, it’s often an afterthought.

In a packed room at Heinz Field, attendees listened to informative presentations from FBI Supervisory Special Agent Michael McKeown, Operations Manager of Networking Greg DiFiore of Dagostino Electronic Services, Systems Engineer Justin Beard of Fortinet, and Ray Monteith from HUB International.

Each presenter covered topics relating to cyber risk and how to protect your business.

FBI SSA Michael McKeown mentioned recent successes his department has had in both local and international cybercrimes, including real estate wire fraud. He equates the increase in cybercrime to cyber predators around the world taking advantage of the opportunity.

DiFiore focused on the steps that companies can physically take to secure their business and the myths that are related to cybersecurity.

According to statistics from the 2018 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, 58% of cyber attack victims were small businesses with less than 250 employees. The hacker may not be interested in your business information, but they are interested in your money or who your business is connected to. What are you willing to pay to (possibly) get your information back? It’s a question that more and more companies are now asking themselves because it’s not a matter of “if” you get hacked, but “when”. The estimated amount of cyber damages in 2021 is six trillion dollars.

DiFiore also explained the importance of educating employees regularly, saying “The threat landscape is constantly evolving. It’s more important than ever to educate your employees on how to protect your business. You should hold regular training sessions and test their knowledge with email campaigns to track if employees are clicking the bad links.”
