FRIDAY15: AI-Driven Location Services with Juniper Networks

Aug 14, 2024

Hello and welcome back to another insightful session of Friday 15! For those joining us for the first time, Friday 15 is exactly what it sounds like—15 minutes on a Friday to dive into the latest advancements in technology. In today's episode, we explore the fascinating world of AI-Driven Location Services with a special guest from Juniper Networks.

If you're tuning in via LinkedIn, feel free to drop your comments on the live stream. I’ll be keeping an eye on them, so say something nice!

Our guest today is Jamie Sanpietro, a specialist engineer at Juniper Networks. Welcome, Jamie! Time is ticking, so let's jump straight into our topic.

AI Native: Juniper Networks' Unique Approach

One thing that stands out about Juniper Networks is their claim of being AI Native. When I hear that, I think about a unique relationship between networking and artificial intelligence. Jamie, could you explain what sets Juniper Networks apart from competitors like Cisco Meraki?

Jamie: Absolutely. When we talk about AI Native at Juniper, it's about the evolution of technology. It started with manual tasks, advanced to automation, and now AI represents the next level. Think of it like levels of autonomy in self-driving cars. At Juniper, AI helps create self-learning networks that continuously adapt and optimize themselves.

Breaking Down AI Native

So what does this AI-driven approach look like in practice?

  • Self-Driving Networks: Juniper's networks can self-configure, simulating user experiences without manual input.

  • Data-Driven Insights: The APs are designed to stream data continuously, giving Juniper over 150 client states for analysis.

  • Machine Learning: Continuous learning models identify and optimize the RF environment to enhance user experience.

The Hardware: Engineered for AI

Let's dive into the hardware that powers this AI-driven network. Jamie, can you talk to us about the data capabilities of Juniper's access points (APs)?

Our access points are designed not just for connectivity but to stream data that's foundational for AI insights. We track over 150 client states for each device attempting to connect to our network, successful or not. - Jamie Sanpietro

Advantages Over Competitors

Is there an AI tax or added cost for choosing Juniper over other networks like Cisco Meraki?

Jamie: Great question! Our cloud architecture was purpose-built for AI from scratch. Unlike our competitors, who integrate AI into existing systems, Juniper's AI-first design gives us a three to five-year head start in AI technology. Our microservices-based cloud ensures scalability and agile updates.

AI-Driven Location Services

Now, let's transition from the tech behind the scenes to its real-world application: Location Services. How does Juniper’s AI-driven network enhance location services, and what does it look like?

Jamie: Traditional location deployments often require additional hardware for BLE coverage. Our access points come with a patented 16-element antenna array for virtual Bluetooth, eliminating the need for extra beacons. Moreover, all configurations are handled directly from the Mist Portal, making it seamless.

Precision and Reliability

One of the remarkable features is auto-calibration via AI:

  • Self-Calibration: Traditional manual efforts are replaced by AI and machine learning models.

  • Path Loss Formulas: These are automatically built for each AP, improving pinpoint accuracy.

Real-World Example

Let’s visualize this with a video example from Juniper’s Cupertino office. What you’re looking at here is a wayfinding feature in action. The Mist Experience application is guiding someone to a specific location within the building. This precision underscores the possibilities of our technology.

Gartner Magic Quadrant: A Competitive Edge

We can talk about the tech, but how does Juniper rank in the industry? Let's pull up the Gartner Magic Quadrant.

Juniper Networks shines as a leader alongside Zebra Technologies in location services. Jamie, can you tell us what sets you apart?

Unlike Zebra, which is solely focused on location services and requires separate hardware and dashboards, Juniper offers a holistic view by integrating wired and wireless networks with location services. No additional overlay hardware is needed, eliminating extra costs and complexity. - Jamie Sanpietro

Potential Use Cases

AI-driven location services offer numerous practical applications across various industries. Here are a few to consider:

  • Emergency Situations: Pinpoint people during emergencies, ensuring everyone's safety.

  • Retail Spaces: Enhance user experience with proximity-based messaging and loyalty applications.

  • Healthcare Settings: Provide easy navigation in hospitals, improving patient and visitor experience.

  • Asset Tracking: Use BLE for tracking critical assets, ensuring they don't go missing. For example, in healthcare, at the VA hospital, we have what we call "Uber for Wheelchairs." It finds the nearest available wheelchair and directs it to the patient.

BLE: The Backbone of Location Services

Jamie, you mentioned BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). Can you explain what BLE is and what’s required to implement it?

Jamie: BLE stands for Bluetooth Low Energy. Our APs with virtual Bluetooth antennas enable BLE capabilities right out of the box. This means no extra hardware beyond the APs and the Mist subscriptions for engagement and asset tracking.
