INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH FIRM AND PITTSBURGH ELECTRONICS COMPANY COMPLETE ‘BUILDING OF THE FUTURE’

Dagostino Electronics’ use of Blo-Lite Fiber Optics Technology touted as core component to ‘future-proofing’ Seagate Technology’s world-class research facility.

Seagate Technology’s state-of-the-art research facility will soon be ready for the spotlight as telecommunications innovator, Dagostino Electronics puts the finishing touches on what will be the first ‘future proof’ facility in the tri-state region.
Seagate’s research team selected the new Pittsburgh, PA site in late 1999 to house more than 150 researchers from all over the world who will now call Pittsburgh home. Construction began in the summer of 2001 but the unique infrastructure planning and design started more than two years ago when Seagate IT Manager Mike Pesta and members of the executive team were charged with creating a cutting-edge facility that would match Seagate’s worldwide reputation for innovation and allow the company to maintain a state-of-the-art information technology infrastructure in the future. 
Seagate Technology, headquartered in Scotts Valley, California, is the world’s leading provider of storage technology for Internet, business and consumer applications. The company’s products include disc drives for Enterprise, PCs and Consumer Electronics.
“Our business is data storage-centric and extremely fast paced, so this advanced research team needed a network architecture designed to be dynamic from the inside out,” said Pesta.

FIRST “FUTURE PROOF” BUILDING
Pesta and his team of engineers first developed a network design that would utilize
fiber optics to provide a flexible, high bandwidth distributed environment.  Once
the initial design was in place, Pesta knew he needed to find an installation firm with the
technological savvy to complete the job. Several companies from all over the country were interviewed, yet Pesta awarded the contract to the Pittsburgh firm of Dagostino Electronics, specialists in voice, data and video systems and services.
“We were looking for more than just an installation company and Dagostino Electronics has a level of expertise and understanding of cutting-edge technology that made a real impression,” said Pesta.
With clients like Heinz Field, PNC Park and Aetna Insurance, Dagostino Electronics was familiar with developing solutions for complex projects and had a pulse on the latest technology available in the market.
The company’s president, Bob Dagostino, known for his innovative approaches and high-tech experience, began reviewing Seagate’s system design. It became clear that he could take the electronics network one step further. Using a fiber optic product called Blo-Lite, his solution would streamline installation and eliminate outdated installation practices while allowing Pesta to add or adjust the type and number of fibers with minimal disruption. They will provide a flexible, responsive, high performance system that a company like Seagate should never outgrow.
“Seagate is setting the standard for building information infrastructures of the future. This technology gives us the ability to address all its growing bandwidth requirements without disruption to the facility,” said Dagostino.  “It’s an incredibly simple solution. Blo-Lite allows us to re-use the tube infrastructure and literally blow out the old fiber and blow the new fiber in place,” he added.
 Seagate is expected to open the facility this summer.

Dagostino Electronic Services, Inc. and Safari Technologies, Inc. are teaming up to bring Safari's Networked Multimedia System to the market place.

The world of information technology is ever-changing. The pace of change is so rapid that it is difficult even for experienced technology professionals to stay abreast of the latest breakthroughs and innovations. Raw computer processing power doubles approximately every 18 months. Ethernet network speeds have moved from 10Mbps (megabits per second) to 100 and even 1,000Mbps. Yet, with these increases in computing power and communication bandwidth, most local area networks (LAN) still have great difficulty dealing with video resources. The reason is very simple. One stream of broadcast video creates a 270-Mbps stream of information. This bandwidth is just for the video portion of the signal. It does not take into account the audio information sent with the information stream. SAFARI's technologies make it possible to do the impossible by bringing video resources to the LAN.

The SAFARI Interactive Information System (IIS) uses a parallel network strategy developed by engineers at SAFARI's Research and Development Center. This brings full motion, broadcast quality video, and stereo audio to one or hundreds of LAN stations simultaneously with no degradation in LAN performance or video quality. The SAFARI IIS adapts easily to industry standard wiring plans and works with Level 2, 3, 4, or 5 twisted pair wire, multimode or single mode fiber optic cable, or even coaxial cable. The parallel network technology enables traditional video resources such as VCRs, Laser Disc Players, Cameras and Cable Television to be shared as easily on a video LAN as file servers, CD-ROM servers and printers are in most existing data LANs. SAFARI hardware and software technologies make all of this possible while shielding the end user from the complexities involved in delivering these resources to the desktop. With the SAFARI hardware products and the easy to use SAFARI Software suite, SAFARI has created a truly plug-and-play solution for constructing a state of the art Interactive Information System.

Dagostino Electronic Services, Inc. has joined with SAFARI Technologies, Inc. in bringing this technology to the marketplace. DES has twenty five years experience in designing and installing structured cabling systems and can use this experience in installing SAFARI's IIS. Additionally, DES can set up and configure the software component to the system.
